One 60-day voyage circling the Australian Coast is being halted in the wake of the fatal incident of an elderly lady who was abandoned by the ship on a distant island.

Suzanne Rees had been trekking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the group for a break. The liner left without her and came back several hours later after the personnel realised the lady was not present.

A major rescue mission found her body the following day.

Investigative bodies are looking into the incident, alongside law enforcement and the official investigator.

The CEO of the voyage organizer announced that guests and crew on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the rest of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "unfortunate death and prior engine troubles".

In a statement, he mentioned that passengers would be given a full refund, and said the operator was working "to coordinate the homeward trips of the passengers via chartered flights".

Regulatory bodies also issued an latest announcement, and said they had "issued a directive to the Commander" preventing any new passengers from entering the ship.

The official said that they would inspect the ship in the port city upon its coming back.

Timeline of Occurrences

The vessel originally sailed from the Australian port on 24 October, and was just two days into the journey at the moment of the elderly woman's demise. Lizard Island was the first stop on the journey.

Passengers on board - who usually pay tens of thousands of currency to participate in the expedition - were taken there for a day trip with the choice of trekking or snorkeling.

Family Reaction

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her loved ones was "shocked and saddened that the liner left the location after an organised tour without my parent".

Via her announcement, she portrayed her mum as an "active octogenarian" who was a affiliate of a walking club.

"Based on limited facts we have been provided, it looks that there was a failure of care and ordinary reasoning," she said.

She added that she wished the examination would be able to determine what "the operator should have done that might have protected Mother's existence".

"According to reports from the investigators that it was a very hot afternoon, and mother took sick on the hill climb," she explained.

"She was asked her to return, without accompaniment. Then the boat departed, reportedly without performing a headcount.

"During some point in that process, or not long after, she succumbed, without company."

Company Reaction

Via official communication, the Chief Executive verified that the organization was "cooperating fully with authorities to support their inquiry".

He stated that the organization was "deeply sorry that this has transpired" and had extended its total backing to the family.

Cruise Industry Practices

The vessel serves up to 120 passengers with forty-six personnel, according to company details. It was specifically designed to access isolated locations of the nation's coast and is equipped with "small boats" - minor craft used to take travelers on land visits.

Incidents such as this are infrequent, and cruise ships have procedures to track which travelers are boarding or leaving, according to travel authorities.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] onboard really isn't an option," one expert stated.

Cruise lines regard these processes with great importance and have "sophisticated systems in place to avoid such events from taking place," the expert added.

"This appears to be most likely a surprising - and unfortunate - isolated incident."
