Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say preliminary tests indicate the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the public for information.
A senior political figure commented the vandalism left him stunned and required to be solved quickly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a gunman aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
