Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was buried under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The group of women also featured leaders in different industries.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
